Basic Games

Here I’m going to share with you some basic games from my island (Java, Indonesia). Yeah, basic games that we usually play before starting other traditional games (or event modern ones) like hide and seek or follow the leader.

Basic Games :

Hom pim pa

This game is usually played by 3 or more kids before starting the real game, the purpose of “Hom pim pa” is to find the winner or loser in the first hand of the real game. To do this, the kids start to sing the “Hom pim pa” song and when it finish, they show their palm up or down. So kids are divided in two groups depending on the positions of their hands. The group with less people, repeat the process until just one of then remains. That one is the winner or the loser. If two of then have a draw, they use another game like Sut / Suit to decide the winner.

Hom pim pa song : Hom pim pa alai um gambreng.

Sut / Suit

This game is originally from Center and East Java. Sut / Suit is a game for 2 players, no more. In other places this game is usually called “Gajah semut Manusia” or  “Elephant, Ant, Person” in its English translation.  And How is it played ?Yeah, like you can see in the photo above, we use just three fingers to play this game: thumb as elephant or Gajah in Bahasa Indonesia, index finger as a person or Manusia, and pinky as an ant or Semut.

These are the rules:
- Thumb vs Index finger ->  Thumb wins
- Thumb vs Pinky -> Pinky wins
- Index finger vs Pinky -> Index finger wins

Njang Panjang

This game is originally from Center and East Java. It’s played by a big group (more than 3 or 5 peoples).

In this game there is a leader who sings a song that tells to the players the movements that they have to do, basically there are to type of movements: straight arm and bended arm. If a player do a wrong movement, he or she is eliminated from the game.

The leader can use any variation of the Njang Panjang Song, these are the variations:

1. Njang panjang, yang panjang jadi  -> Straight arm loses
2. Njang panjang, yang panjang tidak jadi -> Straight arm wins
3. Ndek pendek, yang pendek tidak jadi  -> Bended arm wins
4. Ndek pendek, yang pendek jadi -> Bended arm loses

Of course, the leader control the whole game.

Gunting Batu Kertas

This game, “Gunting Batu Kertas”, is an adaptation of the well-known “Rock Paper Scissors”. Gunting its Scissors, Batu its Rock and Kertas its Paper.

We use the same rules than the international game:
- Gunting vs Kertas -> Gunting wins
- Gunting vs Batu -> Batu wins
- Kertas vs Batu -> Kertas wins

And that’s all folks!
